The man shot several times by police officers after he fired at them late Friday resisted officers and had to be subdued by a stun gun as they tried to apprehend him on Hanks Drive, according to an affidavit of probable cause released Monday.
Christopher Joseph Johnson, 27, 6515 Hanks Drive, remained in the hospital Monday but was booked on three counts of attempted first-degree murder and other counts, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Police Cpl. Myron Daniels, 34, who was shot in the abdomen in the altercation, remains in the intensive care at local hospital, police spokesman Sgt. Don Kelly said. Daniels, a 10-year veteran assigned to the training academy who was the department’s Police Officer of the Year in 2001, was supervising and monitoring trainee ride-alongs Friday night, Kelly said.
Another officer, Cpl. Brannon Ogden, a 6-year veteran assigned to uniform patrol in the First District, was shot in the forearm, treated and released, Kelly said.
Both Ogden and Daniels are on administrative leave, pending conclusion of the Sheriff’s Office investigation into the shooting, he said.
Two other officers at the scene of the shooting who were not involved were placed on administrative leave, Kelly said, but the leaves were lifted Monday.
Police Chief Jeff LeDuff issued a statement Monday in which he commended his officers for their bravery and thanked the community for its support.
The affidavit of probable cause filed by the Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating because the pursuit ended in the agency’s jurisdiction, provides new details.
The affidavit said two other men were in the white minivan Johnson was driving in the high-speed chase that ended at Suburban Apartments, 6515 Hanks Drive, following an attempted traffic stop.
The men were taken into custody on related counts before they could leave the van while Johnson managed to make it inside the apartment he shared with a girlfriend, it said.
When officers pursued Johnson into the apartment through an open front door, a woman told officers that Johnson ran into the rear bedrom., the affidavit said.
Officers ordered Johnson to leave the bedroom but instead he began firing at the three officers, the affidavit said.
Daniels was shot once below his bulletproof vest as well as once in the center of the vest.
The officers returned fire, striking Johnson several times, but he continued to resist as he left the bedroom and ran into the hallway, the affidavit said.
He fought the officers before one of them used a Taser stun gun to subdue him, the affidavit said.
